Salome Van Den Berg

What does she do at Riverbend?

Salome or “Sal” as everyone at Riverbend calls her is one of Riverbend’s highly regarded facilitators. Her attention to details means that every aspect of a client’s needs are taken care of. The fact that she proudly calls herself an obsessive-compulsive list maker coupled with her creative flair ensures that she thoroughly enjoys her role at Riverbend. Sal will dazzle you with her creative development, consulting and organizational excellence, and with her facilitation!

Salome believes in sound business principles. She enjoys the process of matching customer needs with great professional development workshops, ABL®’s and brand or communication projects. She particularly enjoys developing content and ultimately seeing positive results for the client that echo the team’s good efforts.

What did she do before joining #TeamRiverbend?

Salome started her career in the marketing department at Kimberly-Clark Professional. After her time at KCP, she decided to explore the world of coffee and joined Anglo Vaal Industries’ (AVI) Out of Home Division, Ciro Beverage Solutions. She has been a coffee addict since then. During her 6 years at Ciro Beverage Solutions, Salome was exposed to all aspects of business and people management and she eventually headed up both the marketing and training functions as an Executive at the organisation.

In 2010, Salome decided to switch from full-time employee to consultant, specialising in Marketing and Communication. Ciro Beverage Solutions remained her client for another year and during 2010 – 2012 she sourced a wide range of other clients, including mining giant Anglo American. In 2013 she spent a year at Pfizer Animal Health, before deciding to focus on family.

At the end of 2014, after spending valuable quality time with her baby at home, she felt herself ready to re-enter the corporate world again and became part of the family at Riverbend.

Where did she study?

Salome graduated from the University of Pretoria.

What does she do other than Riverbend?

Salome lives in the Hartbeespoort area with her husband, Le Roux, lovely toddler Liya-Mae, baby Avigail and their two four-legged “children” Guinness and Lyla. For fun, Sal enjoys the adrenaline that comes with mountain-biking and scuba-diving, whilst also treasuring quiet moments in the bush with a good book.

As a true animal lover, Sal also found great joy in being instrumental in the set-up and registration of a non-profit animal welfare organisation, Kathu Animal Welfare in 2010. She is still involved in this non-profit organisation as Director.

God is at the centre of her life and she knows that she can do all things through Christ who strengthens her; she is part of her Church’s leadership team.

What’s her favorite Riverbend workshop or experience?

Sal finds great pleasure in facilitating the LIFO Bridging workshop, especially the section where clients start translating messages in into the 4 different styles, so that they “get through” and get can ultimately get action! Her favorite experience? For sure ABL® programs – she literally pours her mind, heart and soul into developing targeted ABL® programs with the team, so when an Action-Based Learning® program hits the mark, Sal jumps for joy!

Facilitator

Elmien Brauns

What does she do at Riverbend?

Elmien is a Facilitator at The Riverbend Group. We are delighted that she is officially on the team, having been a long time friend of ours! Through her formal education and diverse experience, Elmien has built up extensive expertise in driving organisational growth through people, strategy, brands and innovation. She looks forward to sharing this with clients in South Africa and abroad – all in an effort to add value to them personally and professionally. She will act as the lead advisor with some existing Riverbend clients and hope to bring new accounts to the Riverbend family. Elmien is particularly interested in how Riverbend continues the embedding of principles and projects in companies following customised workshops. This ensure the learning becomes behaviour, which turns into habits, and then into culture.

What did she do before joining #TeamRiverbend?

Elmien had been with Kimberly-Clark for much of her career and in a variety of roles. Most recently she was EMEA Sector Leader of BCC. In her role as International Sector Leader for Baby & Childcare, she was responsible for mom’s entire journey with the beautiful brand, HUGGIES, across Europe, Middle-East and Africa. This covered everything from insights into front-end-innovation, moving to development & production and finally into commercialization and communication. She led a direct team of 65+ people and a complex matrix structure with all country teams within the region and therefore sees her ability to build and develop virtual teams, as a key strength. Before managing the baby care portfolio, she managed the Adult & Femcare portfolio. This portfolio includes brands like KOTEX, DEPEND and POISE. Elmien started her Kimberly-Clark career in the business-to-business division with Healthcare & Professional brands, where she learned (and later loved!), all about the integral interaction between the patient and provider or the “user & chooser” in these service-systems. She served as General Manager for the MEA region for 5 years before moving to consumer divisions. Before joining Kimberly-Clark in 2002, she spent 7 years in the pharmaceutical industry, with Sanofi Aventis, in various sales and marketing management roles.

Where did she study?

Elmien would say that her most valuable studies have been at the “University of Life!” – but she did complete some formal education as well – in the form of a Honours degree in Business Communication, at the University of the North West. She does love to stay relevant and has completed various post-graduate diplomas since then. These include a ELP at Stellenbosch University Business School (2004), SLP through the Emerge-leadership group (2008), a GM accelerator course at INSEAD University France (2017) & a Digital Marketing Certification through Circus Street (2019). She is also a member of GILD (Global Institute for Leadership Development).

What does she do other than Riverbend?

You can find her being active, outdoors, with those she loves whenever there are no more pressing things waiting! With 7-year old twins in the house, this is often next to a soccer, rugby or cricket field. But, when she gets her own choice of activity, it would be running or skiing down a mountain or up a river. This is well balanced with her love for all things cultural, including playing one of her favourite instruments, singing or dancing away (mostly when no-one is watching!)…She continues her love for teaching also in this area, where she has been a choreographer for various school productions over the last 20 years. Hubby Glenn joins in the sporty stuff – but tries to steer clear of any cultural activity – except support & appreciation!

What’s her favorite Riverbend workshop or experience?

Watch this space – she is still learning & loves everything at the moment…! Which she finds as a delightfully dangerous place to be ?

What Makes The Riverbend Group Unique?

We exist to inspire and equip people and organizations who want to be greater. Our clients know that we are committed to living out our core values from the first phone call to the final engagement. They guide everything we do at The Riverbend Group

Character

Character is Riverbend’s foundational value; it is what grounds us. It is the underlying principle on which everything about our company and our people is built.
Character is your behavioral compass. It is what you believe on the inside and it is how you show up to others on the outside.
Noble character is intrinsic at Riverbend. We are honorable, moral, ethical, reputable, and upright. We hold our partnerships to a high standard of principled conduct. We are truthful and forthright. We treat our customers’ organization, brand, and people, the same way we protect and honor our own.
Character is a non-negotiable at Riverbend – to be on our team you must inherently have it (have a lot of it) and we only work with organizations and customers who value it.

Love

We chose this value to describe a strong and constant affection that we have for our work, our customers, and each other. We love helping organizations and people become their best self because we genuinely want them to become their best self. There is no better way to walk the journey of life, both professionally and personally.
We are compassionate, passionate and empathetic. We care about the heart of an organization and its people, including our own. You will see and feel this love when you work with us.

Fortitude

Fortitude is a key component to Riverbend’s success. It keeps us focused on the “finish line.” However, it’s not about who crosses the line first or “winning.” It’s about the journey together and knowing the emotional and philosophical strengths we need to capitalize on for success.
Fortitude has been a core value since Riverbend’s inception. It comes from our founder’s MacRae Scottish heritage. The MacRae slogan is “Fortitudine,” which means “with fortitude” visibly depicted with a a lion sitting at the base of the MacRae coat of arms representing courage.
We have a strength of mind that enables us to have the courage to face any circumstance, including one of adversity or difficulty. This Riverbend mind-set is at the core of our work ethic, our passion, and our perseverance. We are not afraid of hard work, both physically and mentally. It is our internal driver to do whatever it takes to deliver, to leave it all on the floor for our clients.

Ingenuity

Ingenuity is the quality of being original and inventive and ours is only limited by our imagination. We are enterprising, insightful, perceptive, innovative, and intuitive. We have this unique skill that allows us to see things others don’t, to discern root causes, to solve problems, to deliver fresh creative solutions that produce results. People tell us that we think differently. And we do.
